Administrative history

Established at a public meeting on 16 January 1815, the society aimed to help the sick poor by giving them financial assistance in their own homes. Members subscribed at least one guinea each year. From 1816, the society was run entirely by its Ladies' Committee. Specially appointed visitors made weekly allowances of money to the needy for periods of up to three months. Occasional gifts of linen and flannel were also made.
In 1931, the society was re-organised and the number of committee members was reduced. Payments of relief were made towards costs of convalescent home treatment and towards the provision of nursing care and medical, dental and surgical appliances. The assistance given included the purchase of dentures and spectacles, insulin for diabetics and nourishing foods such as milk and eggs. Donations were also made to convalescent homes.
