Biographical history

Edith Emma Thompson was born at Griston in 1895, the daughter of Robert and Caroline Thompson. She married Albert Chapman (known as Dick) in 1915. During the First World War, Dick served in the Queen's Royal Sussex Regiment. After the war, the couple lived in Merton, but had returned to Griston by 1920, and lived there until September 1939, when they moved to Hawkins Hill Farm, Ashill. The couple had two sons: Frank (1920-93), who farmed at Newling Farm, East Bradenham, and Gordon (1935-2011), who became a teacher. When Dick died in 1968, Edith sold her home and lived mainly with her elder son, until her death in 1980.
