Letter from the Earl of Clarendon to Lord Townshend, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk

Stating the King's displeasure that certain schismatics were convicted at Norfolk Quarter Sessions on whom 'Mr Long' a lawyer (Robert Longe J.P.) refused to pronounce judgement on a plea of conscience ('I wonder how his Conscience gave him leave to sitt upon that Bench'), and that Mr Fowles refused to be of counsel against them. Salisbury. (The Quarter Sessions book under date 11 July 1665 records the issue of a warrant for the transportation to Jamaica for seven years of Edmond Durrant, Edmond Sconce and Nicholas Riseton convicted for a third offence of being present at a Conventicle held at Wood Norton).
