Species Index Cards

Records of species distribution, originally created by the naturalist E.A. (Ted) Ellis during his time as Keeper of Natural History at Norwich Castle (1928-1956) and were continued by employees of the Natural History department and its successor bodies.

The early part of the series (pre 1950s) comprises a compilation of records from printed sources. From the mid-1950s this appears to have been supplemented by first hand sightings from the recorder network including naturalists around the County and members of the general public. The cards have been amended and added to by various members of staff after the creation of the Norfolk Biological Records Centre in the 1970s and the move away from species distribution to recording by site. There have been attempts to reclassify some of the cards. They formed part of the foundation records of the NBRC in the 1970s and continued to be used for species recording until after the millenium, when this function was superseded by the Recorder database.
