Administrative history

Honour of Clare. The Southwells were lords of the manor in the first half of the sixteenth century; the manor appears in an account of those held by Richard Southwell [NRO NRS 19289]. From the Southwells it passed to the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, at some point prior to 1552. The Dean and Chapter continued to hold the manor; the manor was leased by them to John Brooke, gent., in the eighteenth century [NRO, NRS 24144] and Mr W.B. Gill in the nineteenth century (White 1845).\r\nThe Dean and Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford are named as lords in the Inclosure Act of 1811 and Award of 1813 [NRO, DCN 53/5/2; C/Sca 2/152]: William Brooke Gill is lessee.\r\nThe Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory, 1883.\r\nLast transaction dated: 1924; lord of the manor: Christ Church, Oxford; Steward: W. Hilton Perkin [TNA, HMC 5/6].\r\nStibbards Docking manor was similarly held, and the two manors were administered together from the seventeenth century onwards.
