Biographical history

The Jodrells originated from near Duffield in Derbyshire entering Oxfordshire when Paul Jodrell (1646-1728), Clerk to the House of Commons, married Jane Rolles of Lewknor. Their grandson, Paul Jodrell (1713-1751) married Elizabeth, the daughter and heiress of Richard Warner of Edingthorpe in Norfolk. In his will Richard left his estates in Saxlingham, Sharrington and elsewhere to Paul; but he outlived both Paul and Elizabeth and on his death in 1757 his properties descended to their son, Richard Paul Jodrell (1745-1831), the classical scholar and dramatist and MP. Richard Paul acquired the Hase, Repps and Fountain family estates through his marriage in 1772 with Virtue, daughter of Edward Hase and Vertue Repps. The estate passed to their second son, Sir Richard Paul Jodrell (1781-1861), the poet and MP, who had succeeded to the baronetcy of his maternal great uncle, Sir John Lombe, in 1817. By 1891 the estate, including the properties in Lewknor and Stokenchurch in Oxfordshire and Duffield, Mackeney and Belper in Derbyshire, had descended to Mrs Emily Virtue Jane Churchill Jodrell who in that year conveyed it to Timothy White.

The Jodrells also held property in and around the parishes of Bayfield and Glandford in Norfolk and administered this as a separate estate: it was not included in the 1891 sale to Timothy White. The deeds to this estate together with other family papers are held by the Norfolk Record Office, part of which has been catalogued as MC 632.

Biographical history

Archival history

When the collection was deposited with the Norfolk Record Office in 1965 it contained the title deeds, manorial records and other papers relating to the Jodrell family estates in Oxfordshire, Norfolk and Derbyshire. The Derbyshire records, except for WHT 5/116, were withdrawn by the depositor in 1973 and later sold in 1976 and consequently are not included in this list.

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

Received by the Norfolk Record Office on 13 August and 10 September 1965 (MS 35080).

System of arrangement

The collection was first arranged by Richard Paul Jodrell and perhaps later by Sir Richard Paul Jodrell. Those documents he considered relevant to his title in Oxfordshire he entered into deeds registers (which do not form part of this collection). They were then numbered and wrapped into packets with a brief description of the packet contents recorded on the outside of the wrapper. The packets were then numbered in sequence according to estate. Deeds and leases thought irrelevant were removed from the sequence and left loose. Some items, mainly relating to the Oxfordshire properties, may have been re-arranged and re-numbered. Deeds and papers to properties acquired were added to the most relevant series.

In 1946, Miss H. White began re-cataloguing the collection, copying onto index cards the content descriptions marked on the wrappers: see WHT 10. Her arrangement was based largely on Jodrell's, except that she began to remove the manor court records out of the deeds sequence and into a separate category of their own. Loose miscellaneous deeds were bundled or boxed roughly according to area, e.g. mid-Norfolk. The Derbyshire records were part of the collection at this time and are included in Miss White's card catalogue.

The present arrangement broadly follows White, with a few exceptions: the series of Norfolk title deeds (White's C and D series) precedes that of Oxfordshire (White's B series); and, following Miss White, the manorial records have been placed into a category of their own. However, once the manorial items were removed some bundles and boxes (White's D series) contained miscellaneous unrelated deeds, leases and other material: these have been broken up and listed in detail. A key to White's numbering and the numbers used here can be found below. Cross-references to White's numbers are included in the descriptive list as well and are bounded by square brackets [ ].
