Scope and content
The War Memorial committee was set up to plan and produce an enduring monument to those from King's Lynn who had died during the First World War. They were in charge of developing and funding the plans, through public subscription, for a memorial. The initial call for ?3,000 was never achieved so plans had to be scaled back to fit the reduced budget.
The records cover the Committee minute book, 1919-1923 as well as their accounts, subscription lists, vouchers, etc., 1919-1924. Correspondence, including letters concerning the names of the fallen and dealings with the builders survive. Several lists of names of the fallen, generated at different times and recording different levels of information, can be found in several of the folders. The plan and order of proceedings for the unveiling of the memorial in Tower Gardens in 1921 and related papers can also be seen.
