Scope and content

containing the catalogue of Puttick and Simpson's sale 26 April 1859 of 'the remaining portion' of Turner's library. A small number of the lots have manuscript annotations, which seem to coincide with the 'List of Books, withdrawn from the Sale, in order that they might be given to those who wished for them or in whose hands they might most fitly remain', giving lot number, title and recipient [in M.A.T.'s hand, tipped to the catalogue title page].
Also tipped in is a letter from Putticks, asking instructions over three lots (338, 651, 920), over six lots she had purchased at the manuscripts sale (487, 491, 493, 496, 503), and over two lots withdrawn from that sale (53, 533); and letter to Lady Hooker from T. Stackham Ac[ton].
Pasted to the inner front board is a press cutting about the sale, annotated in M.A.T.'s hand 'Daily News May 26 1859'.
At back of volume is a list of 'Pictures at home', the artists, provenance, and price fetched at sale.
