Scope and content
Case's connection with the Townshend family dated back to the time of the 2nd viscount (died 1738). He was employed both as a solicitor and as steward to the Townshend manors, and was also a personal friend of the 3rd viscount: even when they were at odds, Townshend always signed his letters 'Yours affectionately'. The 3rd viscount and his wife separated in 1741. Their elder son George remained close to his mother and was seldom on good terms with his father. Townshend died in 1764 having named Case as an executor and trustee. His younger son Charles Townshend, the politician, with whom Case was on friendly terms, died in 1767. Case's attempts to improve the relationship between the 3rd viscount and his heir had not endeared him to the latter, and in 1768 he was dismissed from his stewardships.
