Biographical history

Ploughman and carter of the Lathes Estate in Norwich for St Giles' Hospital. The Lathes Estate, in and around St Augustine's parish, Norwich. Managed the Lathes estate for the Hospital and was employed to cart produce and materials to the Hospital from the Lathes and from their other estates in east Norfolk. Produced accounts and a journal of his carting activities, surviving partly in English.

Administrative history

The Lathes estate was acquired by St Giles' Hospital of Holmstreet, Norwich in 1280, and was granted to the City of Norwich in 1547 as part of the estates of the Great Hospital. It was situated partly within the city walls south of St Augustine's Gates being partly co-terminous with the Gilden Croft there, and partly outside those gates in St Clement's parish.
