Dates of existence

Aged seventeen at the outbreak of the Second World War, Stanley Farrer was farming a small holding in Hampshire during the Battle of Britain, but decided to join a Scottish voluntary infantry regiment when he was nineteen. After training, he joined the 1st battalion for oversees service and sailed to Port Taufiq, Egypt via Capetown. He travelled on by truck through Palestine and Jordan to Iraq, where he spent four months guarding the oil wells at Kirkut [Kirkuk] north of Baghdad and also took part in a trek into Kurdistan and Persia (now Iran) with intelligence officers to determine defensive positions and the whereabouts of villages in the area.
After a spell driving army trucks from Egypt to Palestine, Syria and the Lebanon, he was sent to Italy, where he was based at the foot of Monte Camino and was involved in carrying supplies to the forward troops. During early 1944, he was sent back up the line and took part in the crossing of the River Garigliano and the Anzio Beach landings. As a result of the heavy fighting and shelling that he experienced, he developed shell shock. In hospital at Naples, he witnessed the 1944 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. After an interval doing administrative work in a service corps depot, he was posted to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers depot at Molfetta near Bari, Italy, where he drove transport trucks. He was then sent to Greece. In 1945, he returned home on leave after three and a half years overseas and, after a short posting to Otley, Yorkshire, he was finally demobbed.
