Administrative history

The manor was held by the Shernborne family from the conquest to the mid-seventeenth century: Andrew de Sharneburne is named as lord of Shernborne in the Nomina Villarum of 1316. At an inquisition taken in 1487, John Sharnburn, Esq., was found to have been in possession of the manor, holding it of the king as part of his duchy of Lancaster. Henry was his son and heir [IPM H7 1/134].
The Master and Fellows of Emanuel College, Cambridge, are given as lords of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1845).
