Archival history

Most of these charters and letters patent have been examined and annotated by the antiquary, Francis Blomefield in the early 18th century. Many were endorsed with his sign of a circle enclosing a cross, and these often also bear his sign flanked by his initials, 'FB,' penned under the seal fold in the right-hand corner of each document. His year-dates are also often added to the seal fold , usually between the sewn stitches of the seal cords.

Physical characteristics and technical requirements

Most of these charters have been flattened and mounted in plastizote and packaged in made-to-measure four-flap enclosures. This has meant that opportunities to examine the dorse of these documents have been limited. Many of the enclosures also include print-outs of digital photographs of endorsements. Many of these important muniments have suffered exposure to damp at various times and are therefore stained, cockled and their texts at least partly obscured. The seals have in the past, been consolidated with additional wax, often to form roundels, though not exclusivly so.
