History

Family originally came from Shropshire. Son of William Rugge of Northrepps, Norfolk, and brother of Dr William Rugge who was the last abbot of St Benet's, then became Bishop of Norwich 1535-1549. Wife Elizabeth and had five sons, including Francis Rugge who was mayor in 1587, and three daughters. Second wife was Alice, widow of William Hare of Beeston, Norfolk. A mercer, he was sheriff in 1537, and mayor in 1545 and 1550. Also a magistrate during Kett's Rebellion. Lord of the manor of Northrepps, and also had lands in Southrepps and Gimingham, Norfolk. Lived near St John Maddermarket in Norwich. Died 18 February 1558. Buried in the south aisle of St John Maddermarket Church, Norwich.
