Son of Laurence Montague of Dorney, Buckinghamshire. Grandson of Robert Montague of Bondney, Burnham, Buckinghamshire. Son Richard. Educated at grammar school, Eaton, and King's College, Cambridge. Degree in arts. Prebend of Wells, chaplain to King James I. Archdeacon and Dean at Hereford. Installed at Hereford 9 December 1616. Prebend at Windsor. Obtained the see of Chichester and continued as bishop of it for 10 years. Transferred from Chichester. Nominated 1 May 1638, confirmed 12 May 1638. Died 13 April 1641.
Wrote: 'Origines Ecclesiastical and Acts and Monuments and Appello Caesarem'.
