Scope and content

Several people who were or are involved with the RNLI in north Norfolk were interviewed so that the actual production could also act as a documentary to the work of the lifeboats. Transcripts were prepared for all the interviews and it is these that were used to prepare the appropriate catalogue descriptions, though they were compared with the actual interviews to check accuracy. The main subjects covered by the interviews include the Wells lifeboat attending to the Roumanian freighter 'Savinesti' in extreme blizzard conditions [15-16 February 1979]; personal accounts and opinions relating to the RNLI removing Sheringham's large boat and replacing it with a fast inshore lifeboat; increase in formalised training procedures and the change in types of personnel due to the decline of the fishing industry; recollections of former lifeboat men including Henry Blogg; as well as descriptions of how people became involved in the lifeboats, their most memorable and longest trips, and the typical processes involved in launching the lifeboat in response to a call. The memoirs mainly relate to the 1970s onwards, but some of the recollections are of the Second World War onwards.
