Administrative history

The Historical Association was founded in 1906, but it was not until after a lecture given in Norwich by Mr Marvin of the Historical Association in 1919, that a branch was founded in Norwich by two local teachers, W.J. Blake and W. Stephenson. The first general meeting was held in February 1920. With the establishment of the West Norfolk Branch in 1964, the name was changed to the Norwich Branch, but the name 'Norfolk and Norwich Branch' was resumed when the West Norfolk Branch folded. In addition to a programme of regular lectures, the branch arranged summer excursions to places of historical interest. In 1973, it organised its first sixth form lectures and from 1975, sixth form conferences were held at the University of East Anglia. In conjunction with the UEA, the branch held teachers' conferences at the university, whilst in collaboration with the Centre of East Anglian Studies it produced a series of local history pamphlets.
