Administrative history

One of the regional water authorities (WRAs) created in 1974 under the Water Act, 1973. It took over statutory and local authority owned water supply and sewerage undertakings, e.g., Norwich Corporation, the East Suffolk and Norfolk River Authority, South Norfolk Water Board and the East Anglian Water Company.\r\nThe Anglian Water Authority was formed by the Water Act 1973 as one of ten regional water authorities which took over statutory and local authority owned water supply and waste water (sewage) undertakings. Anglian Water was privatized as Anglian Water Services Limited in 1989. It is now a subsidiary of AWG plc. Established by the River Boards Act, 1948, river boards were authorities which controlled land drainage, fisheries and river pollution and had other functions relating to rivers, streams and inland waters in England and Wales between 1950 and 1965.

Administrative history

Established under the Land Drainage Act, 1930, the Catchment Boards were given powers to regulate fisheries and took over from local authorities the duties of flood prevention on main rivers. They were abolished by the River Boards Act, 1948.

Administrative history

Created by the Water Resources Act, 1963, River Authorities controlled land drainage, fisheries and river pollution in rivers, streams and inland waters in England and Wales between 1965 and 1973. They took over the powers of the existing river boards and were given additional duties to monitor water quality and protect water resources.
