Administrative history

From the late 19th century to the 1950s there were four major brewing companies based in Norwich; Bullard and Sons Ltd (Anchor Brewery), Steward and Patteson Ltd (Pockthorpe Brewery), Youngs, Crawshay and Youngs (Crown Brewery) and Morgans Brewery Co. Ltd. In 1958 however Bullards took over Youngs, Crawshay and Youngs and in 1961 acquired half of the estates of Morgans Brewery Co. Ltd, the other half being transferred to Steward and Patteson although the brewery itself was taken over by Watney Mann (Norwich) Ltd. This was the era of mergers and the two surviving independent brewing concerns were subsumed into the Watney Mann Group in 1967. Watney Mann (Norwich) Ltd changed its name in 1968 to Watney Mann (East Anglia) Ltd. In 1972 Grand Metropolitan purchased Watney Mann (East Anglia) Ltd and formed the Norwich Brewery Ltd (later called the Norwich Brewery Co. Ltd). This merged in 1987 with Mann's of Northampton. At roughly the same time Grand Metropolitan's brewery premises were sold to Courage and a new company, Inntrepeneur Estates was created with public houses from both Courage and Grand Metropolitan. In November 1992 just under 2,000 free public houses were released to form Phoenix Inns Ltd. Phoenix Inns Management Ltd is the property manager for this company.
