Appraisal, destruction and scheduling

System of arrangement

In arranging the WAV files, NSA has maintained the order imposed on original reels (from which the WAV files were created) by Hugh Rogers as much as possible, having marked AUD 29/6-9 as being tapes 1 to 4. Though there are several recorded conversations involving Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell; there appears to have only been two separate recording sessions. Hugh Rogers seems to have regarded the master recordings of both sessions to be on reel [marked by him as] number 3, a copy of which forms AUD 29/8. A secondary copy of the first recording session has been copied to form AUD 29/6 and a secondary copy of the second recording session has been copied to form AUD 29/7 [annotated by Hugh Rogers as being tape 1 and tape 2 respectively]. The relationship between the master copy AUD 29/8 and the secondary copies (AUD 29/6 and AUD 29/7) is complicated because the recordings' durations are not the same, AUD 29/8 (Hugh Rogers' master) is longer than AUD 29/6 (Hugh Rogers' back-up), indicating that some editing has taken place or the machines used in the copying process were not operating at the same speed.

Related units of description

An additional recording of the first recorded conversation between Sir Frank Engledow, Joseph Burtt Hutchinson and George Douglas Hutton Bell is held by the John Innes Centre Library and Archives Service but this is a secondary copy of AUD 29/8 and is made up of 3 passes with playback speeds of 3.75 inches (9.525 cm) per second and 1.875 inches (4.7625 cm) per second. Because it appears to be a later generation copy, the Norfolk Sound Archive has not digitized it.
