Name of creator
Son of C.P. Lanchester. Educated at Highgate School, London and Selwyn College, Cambridge. Matriculated 1895, BA 1898, MA 1903. Ordained deacon in 1899 and priest in 1900. He was successively curate, priest-in-charge and vicar of St. Barnabas', Heigham, Norwich, from 1902 to 1970 and was the longest-serving incumbent of his time. He was also Rural Dean of Norwich and an Honorary Canon of Norwich Cathedral. His other interests included the Norwich Unemployment Welfare Association and he was a pioneer motorist. He founded the Norwich Housing Society in 1934, with the aim of providing decent housing for his poorer parishioners.
Note on backing paper of the original frame states that the photograph was found at The Shrublands, West Pottergate, Norwich, home of Canon Lanchester. This property was demolished soon after its sale in 1970, and houses were built on the site. The photograph was given to a community sale in 2019/early 2020 by an unknown person, and (together with other items not sold) was passed to a local charity shop, which transferred the photograph to the Norfolk Record Office. Removed from the original frame by NRO conservators. Original backing paper also retained.
