Educated at Bristol Grammar School, Dulwich College, Sandhurst, Fitzwilliam House and Westcott House, Cambridge. Spent four years as a full-time soldier in the Royal Artillery. Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and chaplain at Fitzwilliam College and New Hall, Cambridge. Former suffragan Bishop of Taunton. Transferred from Taunton, (Suffolk). Nominated 1985. Enthroned in December 1985. Supporter of the ordination of women into the priesthood. He was chosen as the Bishop to marry Prince Edward and Sophie Rees-Jones on 19 June 1999.
