He spent his life as a working mason, specialising in restoration work and developing a strong and scholarly interest in the history of his craft and the stonework of East Anglian buildings including Seven Sacrament fonts, medieval graffiti, mass-dials and masons' marks, and in the history of Norwich, in particular of the parishes and churches of the Ber Street/King Street area. He lived at 25 Geoffrey Road, and died in 1936. His 'Description of St Julian's Church, Norwich and an account of Dame Julian's connection with it' was published shortly after his death.
