Scope and content
Includes, inter alia, personal papers and documentation, abums, correspondence files, photographs, and papers relating to the Norfolk Churches Trust. Some records, mainly those compiled by Antoinette de Carle Smith, are written in the French language.
The papers were mainly compiled and collected by Antoinette de Carle Smith, wife of Edward de Carle Smith. Edward de Carle Smith was a chartered accountant whose family, for many generations, lived in Norwich, and founded the wholesale druggists and manufacturing chemists, Smith & Sons, in Magdalen Street, Norwich.
Edward de Carle Smith was the son of Joseph de Carle Smith (1862-1940) and Priscilla, née Boardman, (1863-1947), daughter of Edward Boardman, architect of Norwich (1833-1910). Edward de Carle Smith's Great Great Grandfather was Joseph Smith (?-1820), who married Catherine de Carle (1789-1861). Thereafter the family took the name de Carle Smith.
Edward de Carle Smith married Antoinette Bordier, (1907-2002) in Switzerland in 1936, daughter of Colonel Edouard Bordier of Aubonne, Switzerland.
