Biographical history

He worked in Norwich as a printer and was secretary of the local branch of the Typographical Association from 1899 to 1904. He was a member of the Independent Labour Party and fought unsuccessfully in the Norwich by-election of 1904. He was elected as M.P. for Norwich in the 1906 General Election. He left the Independent Labour party on the outbreak of war in 1914. He joined the Asquith coalition ministry in 1915 as a lord commissioner of the Treasury. In December 1915, under Lloyd George, he became parliamentary secretary to the Board of Trade and entered the Cabinet as Minister of Labour in summer 1917. In June 1918 the Labour party withdrew its support for the coalition but Roberts (and a few other ministers) stayed in the Coalition and left the Labour party. In January 1919 he became Food Controller and held this office until he resigned from the Government in February 1920. Roberts successfully stood as an Independent candidate in the elections of 1918 and 1922. In 1923 he joined the Conservative party and stood as their candidate in Norwich in the December 1923 election; he was defeated. After this he retired from politics, devoting himself to business interests. Born 27 July 1869 at Chedgrave: his father was the village shoemaker. Died on 25 April 1928.
