Biographical history

Son of Walter Godfrey Whittingham, Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Brought up in Rutland, he qualified as an architect and practised in the 1930s at 10 Tower Street and 11 Neale Place, Ipswich. In 1932 he was appointed Surveyor to Norwich Cathedral and on his retirement in 1963 he became archaeological adviser to the Dean and Chapter. An antiquary and, though he published comparatively little, authority on medieval architecture, he inherited the interests and many of the papers of his grandfather W.T. Bensly, antiquary and Chapter Clerk.

Scope and content

Records found in the office of Arthur Bensly Whittingham (d 1986), Surveyor to the Fabric 1933-1963, and subsequently Archaeological Advisor to the Chapter. Earlier surveyors were John Brown, salaried from 1853/4 but employed on an ad hoc basis from the 1830s, who resigned in 1869; his son, John Henry Brown 1869-1891; and his son Charles John Brown 1891-1932. Drawings presumably by the latter are signed Charles J. Brown. John Brown and John Henry Brown also practised as architects and drawings from their private practice were also found and are listed here (nos. 218-234).
