Biographical history

Born Norwich, 16 May 1850; died Cambridge, 19 November 1929. The youngest of five children of Henry James Mann (1809-1860) and Ann Couzens Jubey (1811-1891), Mann became a chorister at Norwich cathedral. In 1870, he was appointed organist of St Peter's, Wolverhampton. In 1871, he moved to Tettenhall, with its collegiate church, where he met his future wife, Sarah Ann Ransford (1854-1918), whom he married on 25 November 1874. He matriculated at New College, Oxford in 1872, obtaining the degree of BMus in 1874. Following a brief spell, from 1875, at Beverley Minster, he was appointed King's College organist in 1876, a position he held for over 50 years. He was appointed University organist in 1897.
