Administrative history

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is the main trade union for school teachers in England and Wales. It only accepts qualitifed teachers, or those training to be qualified teachers, as members and it is a member of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). The NUT was founded at a meeting at King's College, London, on 25 June 1870. At first it was called the National Union of Elementary School Teachers (NUET) but formally changed its name to the NUT at its Annual Conference in 1889.\r\nThe Norfolk County Division of the NUT was founded in the early 1900s. It consists of various local NUT associations, sometimes also called branches, which it represents. These associations have changed and merged over time. The Norwich City Association merged with the Norfolk organization, which inherited its records, in about 1974. For records of the Norfolk County Division see SO 273/1 and for the Norwich City Association see SO 273/2. For records of the Broadland Association see reference SO 273/3. The Broadland Association was created when the Great Yarmouth and East Norfolk associations amalgamated in 1984 and consequently it inherited their records.\r\nFor a list of the associations and officers of the Norfolk Division in 1974, see the NUT annual report reference SO 273/1/10. Currently (2009) the following associations form the Norfolk Division: Broadland; Dereham and Fakenham; Downham and District; South Norfolk and Breckland; Norwich City and District and West Norfolk.
