The manor was owned by Hempton Prory until the Dissolution. It was granted in 1545 to Sir William Farmer and his wife Catherine and passed through many owners, all of whom were 'unforunate' according to Sir Henry Spelman [source: Taylor's Index Monasticus].\r\nLord Charles Townshend is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1845).\r\nMarquis Townshend is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1883).
