Melvin D. 'Mel' Westbrook was born in Genoa, Nebraska on 2 September 1922. He was pilot of crew no. 553. He transferred, along with his co-pilot Bill Pond, to the 492nd Bomb Group (known as the 'Carpetbaggers') and flew two missions to Sweden. He died on 22 December 2014 in Turlock, California.
