Biographical history

The Jodrells originated from near Duffield in Derbyshire entering Oxfordshire when Paul Jodrell (1646-1728), Clerk to the House of Commons, married Jane Rolles of Lewknor. Their grandson, Paul Jodrell (1713-1751) married Elizabeth, the daughter and heiress of Richard Warner of Edingthorpe in Norfolk. In his will Richard left his estates in Saxlingham, Sharrington and elsewhere to Paul; but he outlived both Paul and Elizabeth and on his death in 1757 his properties descended to their son, Richard Paul Jodrell (1745-1831), the classical scholar and dramatist and MP. Richard Paul acquired the Hase, Repps and Fountain family estates through his marriage in 1772 with Virtue, daughter of Edward Hase and Vertue Repps. The estate passed to their second son, Sir Richard Paul Jodrell (1781-1861), the poet and MP, who had succeeded to the baronetcy of his maternal great uncle, Sir John Lombe, in 1817. By 1891 the estate, including the properties in Lewknor and Stokenchurch in Oxfordshire and Duffield, Mackeney and Belper in Derbyshire, had descended to Mrs Emily Virtue Jane Churchill Jodrell who in that year conveyed it to Timothy White.

The Jodrells also held property in and around the parishes of Bayfield and Glandford in Norfolk and administered this as a separate estate: it was not included in the 1891 sale to Timothy White. The deeds to this estate together with other family papers are held by the Norfolk Record Office, part of which has been catalogued as MC 632.
