Administrative history

These were three separate manors but are treated as one manor in the surviving records. Parish and manor are spelled Shelfhanger or Shelfanger. Vise de Lou is derived from the name of an early owner, Humfridus Vise de Lou (the surname meaning 'with the face of a wolf'). As the centuries passed this meaning was lost and very many variations of spelling occur. The most common are variants of 'Vice de Lewes' - presumably from a supposed association with the priory of Lewes (which did own some manors in Norfolk but not this one). The manor was bought by the Duke of Norfolk in 1532. Frier's is possibly also from the name of an early owner. It also has many variants - Fryer's, Friar's, Frier's etc. The manor itself was given to the abbey of Sibton [Suffolk] in 1149 and sold by the abbey to the Duke of Norfolk in 1532. It continued to be held by the Duke into the mid-nineteenth century.
The Duke of Norfolk is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory, 1883.
Last transaction dated: 1865; lord of the manor: Duke of Norfolk; Steward: F.T. Cuddon [TNA, HMC 5/6].
