Administrative history
Owned by the Hospital of St John in Carbrook, to whom it was given by Maud, Countess of Clare. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it passed to the Crown, and was granted in 1543 to Sir Richard Gresham and Sir Richard Southwell, the latter soon becoming sole owner. He settled it on his nephew Sir Robert Southwell. The Southwells united it with Woodgate in Carbrooke: see that manor for the subsequent descent.
