Administrative history

The manor of Bexwell was held by the Bekeswell, or Bexwell, family from the twelth to mid-seventeenth centuries. The manor starts to appear as 'Bexwell, Downham, Denver, Rusten (Ryston)' manor in court books from the mid-sixteenth century onwards. Henry Bexwell died in 1654 and Frances his daughter was heir; she married Robert Aprice, Esq., who held court in 1661, before conveying the manor to Sir John Holland, who held his first court in 1671. The manor came to the Holt family in the early eighteenth century; John Holt, Esq., held his first court in 1717 [NRO, PRA 3]. The manor remained with the Holts throughout the eighteenth century; Thomas Holt held his first court in 1787 and was still lord in 1799. Thereafter the manor passed to Robert Fellowes, Esq., given as lord in 1802; by 1841 Edward Roger Pratt, Esq., is given as lord, and the manor remained with the Pratts into the twentieth century [NRO, PRA 714]. \r\nRevd Jermyn Pratt is named as lord in 1864; Edward Pratt in 1896 [NRO, MC 2907/1].\r\nEdward Murray Pratt, Esq., is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1883).
