Administrative history
All or part of this manor was held of the Honour of Clare. Inquisitions post mortem provide information about the tenant-in-chief of the manor: William de Roucester died in possession 1248-9: heir his brother Peter de Roucester [IPM 1:1/155]. An inquisition held in 1486 found that Anthony Earl Rivers had held the manor of Cicely Duchess of York as part of the honor of Clare. John de Veer Earl of Oxford and William Tyndale and Elizabeth his daughter were his next heirs. However, since his execution in 1483 the issues and profits of the manor had been taken by John Howard, Duke of Norfolk [IPM 2:1/15]. Sir John Berney paid fine to the Honour of Clare for entry into the lordship 1785: he also paid the fine for his father Sir Hanson Berney. Previously Sir Richard Berney paid the ingress fine in 1724 [NRO, BL/MA 68]. Sir Hanson Berney, of Kirby Bendon, is given as lord of the manors within Barton Bendish parish in White's Trade Directory (1845). Sir Henry Hanson Berney, Bt, is given as lord of the manors in Barton Bendish in White's Trade Directory (1883).
