Dates of existence

John Clayton Wise was born in Somerton, Oxfordshire, on 6 June 1923, the son of Major Frederick Wise. During the Second World War, he farmed at Cropredy Lawn in Oxfordshire before moving, in 1949, to Red Lodge Farm in Polebrook, Northamptonshire, where he started public life as a member of Oundle and Thrapston Rural District Council (1951-4). In October 1954, he moved to Ramsley Farm, North Elmham, Norfolk, where he ran a mixed farm which included one of the largest flocksof breeding ewes in Norfolk. In an early example of farm diversification, John Clayton Wise set up a caravanning site on his Norfolk farm in 1971 and himself became a keen caravanner. When he retired from active farming in 1984, he moved to Blakeney for about two years before buying a grassland farm in East Sussex and then retiring to Somerset in 1999. He died on 29 October 2012 in Fareham, Hampshire. John C. Wise was a member of Mitford and Launditch Rural District Council for seven years (1961-7). In 1969, he took his seat as the second Baron Wise on the death of his father. He remained at Westminster until hereditary peers were removed by the House of Lords Act, 1999.
