James Lewton Brain married 1877 Clare Lawrence; they were headmaster and mistress of elementary school at Swanton Morley. She started cookery classes at village school for some of the girls using own kitchen at the schoolhouse and later for some of the mothers and other village women. Their fifth and youngest child was Charles (Charlie or Tardie) Henry Lewton Brain, Diana Lewton Brain's father, b. 1890; m. at Heacham 1920 Evelyn Pull (1888-1967). He served in the Royal Artillery, 1914-18, first in France, then in Palestine and Egypt.
Charles/Tardie worked in Barclays' bank and they lived at South Woodford from 1920, but took holidays at Heacham and moved there altogether in 1948. In wartime DLB served in the ATS. She was a schoolteacher at the Blyth School, Norwich, from 1957, and in 1963 moved to King's Lynn as Head of Department Modern Languages at King's Lynn Girls' High School, and lived at Hampton Court in Lynn. From 1967, she taught in Kenya, returning to England in 1974, when she obtained the post of Head of Modern Languages at the Technical College at Lynn (NROCAT; later the College of West Anglia). In 1978, she moved to Sedgeford with her father. In 2003, she moved back to King's Lynn.
