Matthew Nelson is listed in the 1841 census at Holme next the Sea. Also in the household were Elizabeth, Martha and Mary Nelson, all in their twenties. In the 1851 census Matthew is recorded as a widower aged 60, with two daughters: Elizabeth aged 36 and Mary aged 34. His occupation is given as a farmer of 181 acres, employing 8 men and 4 boys. In the 1861 census he is termed a yeoman land owner occupying about 220 acres, and employing 8 men, 2 team carters and 2 boys.
Thought to have been given to Julia Potter (b1887), who lived at Holme next the Sea next door to a Mrs Knight, a former Miss Nelson, who is believed to have been a descendant of Lord Nelson.
