The letters are almost all official and relate to County administration inc. justices' and deputy lieutenants' business, musters, taxation, recusancy, sea breaches, and Privy Council matters; also to Gawdy's activities as Sheriff in 1593-1594 and 1601-1602. Contents include detailed subsidy assessment for the hundreds of South Greenhoe, Shropham, Giltcross, Wayland, Grimshoe, Diss, Henstead, Depwade, and Earsham, 1598; various muster rolls, 1599-1602; agreement listing houses of correction in the County, 1600, and orders re that at Swaffham; list of MPs elected to the 1601 Parliament; Norfolk assessment for tenths and fifteenths (parish totals), 1601; assessment for arms, Shropham hundred, 1602; view of Yarmouth muster giving total of men aged 16-60, 1602. Inc. also, as precedent, order of 1395 listing beacons within the County and letter from Sir Edward Coke inviting Gawdy to his eldest daughter's wedding, 1602. The volume is in two sections, the first covering the years 1588-1599 and the second (much longer) covering 1599-1602; each is preceded by a table of contents.
