Assheton family of Middleton, Lancashire

The Assheton family descended from Orm Fitz Edward. He became Orm de Assheton upon his marriage to Emma, a daughter of Albert de Gresley, Baron of Manchester, and received land in Ashton-under-Lyne, from which the name is derived. The Asshetons held the seat of Downham Hall, in what is now Greater Manchester.
In 1760, the first Baron Suffield married Mary, daughter and co-heir of Sir Ralph Assheton, third and last Baronet, of Middleton, Lancashire, whose sister, the other co-heir, married Thomas Egerton, first Earl of Wilton. The Lancashire estates of the Assheton family were divided between the Harbord and Egerton families in 1773. The Harbord family disposed of its property there during the mid nineteenth century.
