Born at Myrfield in Yorkshire. Son of William and Alice Hopton. Became a Black Friar in the Order of St Dominick. Educated at Oxford. During his travels to Rome he took the doctor of divinity. Returned to England in 1529 and made prior of the Black Friars. Rector at Yeldham-Magna, Essex, and at St Anne's, Aldersgate in London. Nominated 4 September 1554, elected 2 October 1554, with Lady Mary, later Queen Mary, giving her assent. Consecrated 25 or 28 October 1554, prov. 21 June 1555. p. 24 August 1558. A very cruel man who died in fear of retribution for his acts. Died in Norwich and buried in the cathedral.
