History

John Frank Bales first served with the 492nd Bomb Group and then with the 467th Bomb Group in Roger L. Leister's crew. On 18 August 1944, their B-24 'Broad and High' was hit by anti-aircraft fire and was low on fuel on its way back from a mission. The B-24 crash landed at Kirby Bedon, injuring Mr Bales and killing four of the crew : 2nd Lt William M. Sherril, T/Sgt Darlton W. Pontius, T/Sgt. George Lifschitz and S/Sgt. Philip A. Snyder. Mr Bales was awarded the Legion of Honour Medal by the French Government in 2015.
