History

At Unthank Road, Norwich. Jenny Lind Infirmary in Pottergate was opened in 1853 on the basis of a sum of £1,253 that had been raised from two concerts given in Norwich by Jenny Lind, the Swedish singer, during 1849. By 1898 the Pottergate premises had become unsuitable for use as a children's hospital and in that year it was moved to Unthank Road where an in-patient block was erected on a site purchased by Jeremiah James Colman in memory of his wife. In 1918, known as the Jenny Lind Hospital. Out-patients continued to be seen at Pottergate until 1929 when facilities were provided for them on the Unthank Road site. From 1929 the hospital was closely associated with the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital so far as staff and administrative arrangements were concerned. Control of the hospital passed from the Board of Management to the Norwich, Lowestoft and Yarmouth Hospitals Management Committee in 1948; subsequently to the Norfolk Area Health Authority. In 1976 the last patients were treated on the Unthank Road site, patients now being seen in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. The Jenny Lind Hospital was demolished in 1976 and the Colman Hospital for the younger chronic sick built on the site.
