Two colour photographs of the bell at St Mary's church, Hellesdon
Part of Parish Records of Hellesdon
The photographs were taken by Brian Cleland, churchwarden, during an inspection by a bell specialist. One shows the outside of the bell and the inscription running around the top; the other shows the interior of the bell and the construction of the bellcote. The church bell is inscribed 'IOHNES DE HEYLESDON ME FECIT FIERI IN HONORE MATRS CRESTI WILELLMVS DE NORWYCO ME FECIT' (John de Heylesdon caused me to be made in honour of the Mother of Christ. William of Norwich made me). The bell is one of the oldest surviving in Norwich. It is probable that John de Hellesdon (died 1384) paid for the construction of the bellcote and steeple.
