The poor rate was levied by parish officials, the Churchwardens and Overseers, and confirmed by the Borough Justices. Thus even after the inclusion of Gorleston-with-Southtown and Runham Vauxhall (a detached part of the parish of Runham) within the borough boundary, three separate rates continued to be levied, each of the three parishes being within a different Union. The Yarmouth rate books were numbered up in 1855 when the series, starting about 1740, was virtually complete. At some time after 1895, however, it was decided to retain books for every fifth year only. The terms 'St Nicholas Ward' and 'North Ward' are used interchangeably.
