Records, maps and plans of the City Engineer's Department.

Norwich City Council, City Engineer's Department; ?-?; Norwich, Norfolk

Plans

The building control plans commence in 1877 and include plans of new developments such as houses, cinemas, public houses and the like and plans of additions or alteration to existing properties, for example the alteration of shop fronts, window, etc. and the construction of garages, outhouses, etc. The plans, which vary in size and detail are usually drawn on tracing paper, linen or, occasionally, cartridge paper and are usually accompanied by a notice of intention to build and sometimes a supporting letter from the architect or builder responsible for the work. Each plan is stored in a paper envelope and is arranged numerically. A series of indexes was compiled in the City Engineer's Department and these are listed at N/EN 12/2, although in many cases the title of the plan and the index entry are not sufficient to properly identify the property today.

All the City building control plans, for late May 1967 onwards, (with a very few exceptions) have been microfilmed, and microfiche copies are available at either Building Control Services, Technical Services Group, or (in the case of plan numbers 32941-44825 which were found along with the planning applications) the Planning Department. The decision was therefore made to keep only a selection of the original plans rather than all as hitherto. The plans of most new buildings have been retained. The others have been sampled on the following basis: 1 in 10 plans relating to domestic alterations (remedial underpinning, improvements, modernisation, extensions etc.) and 1 in 10 plans relating to garages, car-ports, sheds and greenhouses have been retained. Plans relating to minor non-domestic matters (W.C.s, raised storage platforms, portakabins, fire escapes etc.) have mostly been destroyed. All plans relating to listed buildings have been retained.

Please note that in this list the numbers are usually the covering numbers of the contents of a box and do not indicate that all documents within that range are present.
