Letters of W.H.M.H. Aitken

Family letters, including one from Eda describing 'Eric's' death on the Western Front - 'he held a line of trench, which was meant for 200 men, and he and 19 men under him held it for half an hour. He found a gun left somewhere in an empty trench, and working it himself, he kept the enemy back', 20 May 1915. With letters from Aitken to his wife decribing mission work including one in Exeter in 1915 - 'the congregation is largely composed of dear old goodies of the most antiquated type .... There is no doubt that the presence of a large number of soldiers in the city is a great obstacle to such an effort [of preaching]. The elder women are kept busy by their billets and the younger by their flirtations'.
