Postcard of young soldiers, including Charlie Martin, at a boarding house in Gorleston-on-Sea

  • MC 3439, 1067X4
  • Fondo
  • 1915

A group of twelve soldiers, standing behind three seated women. One of two copies of this image, the other retained by the donor. On the reverse of the retained image it states 'Charlie taken at Anerley House, Gorleston on Sea, July 1915'. Comparison with modern images of the area suggest that the house may have been on Clarence Road in Gorleston. A 1915 directory mentions two boarding houses there, one at No.55, run by Mrs Annie Drew, and the other at No.52, run by Mrs Kate Reeve. Charlie Martin is said to be fourth from the left in the front row, reg. 2318, Middlesex Regiment, then Rifleman 6075 2nd/17th BN London Regiment. He joined the Army September of 1914 and was killed 21 July 1916. He is buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery.
