Miscellaneous papers relating to incumbents not residing within their benefices. The Act of 43 Geo. 3, c.84 required the registration of all licences after which date registers and files of applications were kept. The Act of 1 & 2 Vict., c.106, s.50 required that all petitions for licences for non-residence should be filed.

This category consists of stray parish records.

Alternatively known as Register Bills or Parish Register Transcripts. These are contemporary copies of parish register entries made, usually, by the incumbent and presented to the Bishop, or his Visitor, at the episcopal visitation. Returns were made less frequently after the middle of the 19th century.

These rough notebooks contain the details of the parties from which the marriage licences were drawn up.

Notebooks of the bishop giving details of where the confirmation service took place, what parishes attended and the names and ages of candidates. From February 1944 only the date, place, name of the officiating clergyman and number of confirmees by sex.

Miscellaneous correspondence, accounts and papers mainly relating to diocesan business.

Under Gilbert's Act 17 Geo. III c.53 (1776), incumbents were permitted to mortgage a parsonage house, where there was one, and the benefice income deriving from the glebe and other rights and titles, in order to raise money to build a new, or repair the old, parsonage house. All mortgage deeds were to be registered with the diocesan registry and the counterpart kept by the incumbent. A later Act of 28 & 29 Vic. c.69 (1865) allowed incumbents to borrow money for the purpose of building, or re-building, outhouses or other premises belonging to the parsonage or for repairing the chancel of the parish church. From 1779 until 1st July 1842, the deeds were copied into a register. Thereafter they were deposited at the registry and numbered consecutively upon receipt. An index to these deeds is in the last mortgage register, ref. DN/PHM 2/3. Persons nominated by the incumbent to hold the funds raised by the mortgage were required to enter into a bond to fulfill the terms of the mortgage: see DN/PHM 4. Up to 1918, nominees' accounts and, in some cases, surveyor's certificates, were also deposited with the deed. Occasionally parsonage house conveyance deeds were also included: but see too, list DN/DPL 4.

The Residence Act of 1803 established a system of licensing for non-resident clergy.

These records are licences granted by the Bishop permitting incumbents to reside elsewhere than within their benefices. After the Pluralities Act -of 1838 introduced new limits on pluralism, a new printed form was introduced in 1839 for the licences of those who resided elsewhere because there was no parsonage house or it was unfit to live in, and these were filed separately although some licences issued for these reasons also continued to be entered on the older type of form.
