Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist Architects' Drawings: the Scotts

  • RC 1
  • Fondo
  • 1882-1914

Architects' drawings up to 1907, plus some architectural material. The majority of the drawings listed here are by the two Scotts. Some are signed and dated but many are not and their styles were so similar that no attempt has been made to distinguish them. The other principal hand is presumably that of another member of the firm who specialised on the engineering side. A number of the plans are drawn by one hand and annotated by another and occasional notes are added probably by Thomas Burton, the clerk of works at Norwich.

Norwich Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist Architects' Drawings: Rattee and Kett

  • RC 2
  • Fondo
  • 1882-1886

This collection consists of drawings used by Rattee and Kett of Cambridge for the construction of the first part of the nave under the direction of George Gilbert Scott. The first sod was cut on 24 June 1882, the foundation stone laid on 17 July 1884, and the nave opened on 29 August 1894. There was a separate contract for the foundation works, executed by Jacob P. Batch of Norwich, and in 1888 the contract for Rattee and Kett was terminated and the work completed under a clerk of works, Thomas Burton, using direct labour. The drawings refer predominently to the west end of the nave with dates between 1883 and 1885; many show details of stonework, including a number of moulding templates. There are no details of stone carvings, reference simply being made to the fact that stone is to be left for carving; virtually all the carvings on the building are believed to have been executed by James Ovens, who may have worked under a separate contract and used different drawings, which are now lost (some for the later east end survive in a separate collection, including just one drawing which appears to represent the 'Synagogue' figure on the label of the west portal).
